About This Journal
I'm a writer. My daughter is an amazing kid.
She started out very small -- at 1lb 13oz -- and is now a happy, healthy and only child.
I read a lot about how adult 'singletons' view themselves, their childhood, and their parents, especially over time, as remaining family members pass away and their childhood memories lose the clarity of immediacy, stripping the kids themselves of identity. For me, the jarring take-away is that my daughter needs someone to record for her the stories, the details, and the perspective that validate her understanding of where she came from. And that person is me.
While my background is in magazine and Web writing and editing, I spent most of my daughter's young life running a start-up grass-fed beef farm and meat business with my husband. That story is twined with hers, or hers with it. I'm sure there will come a time when she'll realize that we gave the business as much attention and priority as a child, out of necessity.
But in summary, this journal is intended to capture things I don't want to forget and that I hope will help my daughter better understand who I am as her mother.
Thanks for reading.
